Why should I choose it?
- You are extremely interested in the theory behind physical education and sport.

- You belong to a sports club outside of school and compete on a regular basis

- You would like to learn more about the anatomy and physiology of the human body.
- How do the skeletal and muscular systems work together to produce movement?
- How does training affect the cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory systems?
- How can levels of performance be improved by the principles of training and physical fitness testing and training?
- How can levels of performance be improved by Sports psychology?
- How can factors such as social groups, commercialisation and technology affect and improve performance.
- The importance of health, fitness and well-being.
The answers to all of these questions and many more will be considered during the GCSE PE course.
What does the course involve?
The course involves a large THEORY element worth 60% of the overall assessment.
Pupils will be timetabled for two theory lessons per week.
The theory element of the course includes:
- Applied Anatomy and Physiology
- Movement Analysis
- Physical Training
- Sports Psychology
- Socio-cultural influences
- Health, fitness and well-being.
The course has a practical element that is worth 40 % of the overall assessment. Pupils will be timetabled for one practical lesson per fortnight.
Pupils will be assessed in three sports and have to produce one piece of coursework, so there is an expectation that pupils are fully engaged and committed to their chosen sporting activities. Mr Davies and Mrs Johnson will advise if you meet the practical entry requirements.
What skills will I develop?
You will enhance your technical and tactical ability in a number of activities. You will improve your skills in applying theoretical knowledge to practical performance. Analysis, evaluation and independent research are all key skills which will be improved and developed.
How will I learn?
Your teachers will employ a number of strategies to provide you with regular guidance, feedback and monitoring. Independent learning and research will also play a part on the course. Your ability to analyse and improve your own and others’ performance is central to your learning.
How will I be assessed?
- Two written theory examinations of one hour and fifteen minutes each (worth 60%)
Paper 1: The human body and movement in physical activity and sport and Paper 2: Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport
- Practical assessment in three activities (these do not have to solely be activities that we offer in College). This comprised with a controlled assessment piece of written coursework completes the practical component of the course (worth 40%). Practical activities offered at the College will include; Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Cycling, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rock Climbing, Rugby Union, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Water Polo.
What could a qualification lead to?
GCSE Physical Education could lead to careers in Sports Science, Sports Nutrition, Physiology, Physiotherapy, Sports Business, Teaching and Coaching, Outdoor Instructor and Recreational Management.
