About St Edward's
St Edward’s College offers an inspiring and challenging Catholic education to over 1200 children from across the City and further afield. An explicitly Catholic culture prioritises serving God through serving one another in community, demonstrating commitment, caring for others and striving for success. These values are drawn from our rich history and patrimony, the vision of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers and Father James Nugent who, in 1853, established what was later to become St Edward’s College. Pupils and staff are guided by the ethos of the College in the way they conduct their lives and relate to one another – all are encouraged to work hard, respect themselves and respect others, to do and to be their best.
The school is an Academy (a state-funded independent school) and is located on a spacious campus in East Liverpool. It is the Choir School to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King and provides both boy and girl choristers. There is a strong tradition of music at the College and, each year, a number of pupils are admitted to Year 7 on Specialist Musicians Places.
Academic standards and expectations are high and the curriculum offers breadth, choice and challenge at all key stages. There are around 300 students in Sixth Form who are able to choose from 18 A Level subjects and many of whom proceed to study at some of the country’s most prestigious universities. There are also a small number of BTEC courses for those who wish to have a more vocational focus for their Sixth Form studies.
All pupils and students are encouraged to take part in activities outside the classroom and a broad range of curriculum-enhancing and extra-curricular activities are offered with pupils representing the College at local, regional and national level in a range of sports, music and other cultural activities. The curriculum is enriched by an extensive array of school trips that are offered to pupils to promote learning and enjoyment beyond the classroom.
The school not only takes pride in the academic success and achievement of its pupils but also in their high standards of discipline and ethics. These are promoted through an effective and well-established pastoral system (including a strong Chaplaincy), with a strong emphasis placed on care, guidance and support and the emotional and spiritual development of all pupils.
St Edward’s plays a prominent role within the community. Each year, many pupils take part in voluntary and charity work, the school’s sports facilities are available for community use during the evenings and weekends and the school has fostered close links with neighbouring primary and secondary schools, industry and the City’s universities.
