Swimming & Water Polo
Pupils at St Edward's College are fortunate enough to have access to a 25 metre indoor heated swimming pool, including changing rooms that were refurbished in 2008. They can enjoy swimming throughout the year. Swimming both forms an important part of the Physical Education programme and is offered as an extra-curricular activity for all pupils.
All pupils are welcome. There is an 'open door' policy, regardless of ability, and St Edward's offers tuition to all levels. A number of committed swimmers also train with external clubs and coaches, including Everton Swimming Club.
The swimming teams compete throughout the year, although most of the competitions are held in the Advent and Lent terms. Traditionally, the swimming teams do very well, competing regularly against local schools. For some fixtures the boys and girls compete in separate competitions, while at other times they compete together as a single team. The swimming team also nominates relay teams to compete in national relay competitions.
The College has a long tradition of producing National Age Group Standard Swimmers with Old Edwardian, Michael Rock, competing in both the Beijing and London Olympics. School swimming squads regularly reach the National Schools Relay Competition finals.
Water polo is relatively new to St Edward’s College and provides pupils with the opportunity to develop new skills and learn a different sport. The after school water polo club is growing in popularity and the College has achieved success in competitions with the U13s winning the City Championship and the U15s winning the National Bowl final.
All year groups and abilities are welcome although water polo requires an individual to be a proficient swimmer as players are unable to touch the sides or bottom of pool for long periods.
