Sport

Physical Education is of value to all pupils as a means of personal development. Alongside its academic tradition, the College boasts a long history of sporting achievement. Pupils take part in competitions on a weekly basis, in fixtures against schools throughout the North West and in regional and national contests in many of the sports offered at the College.

The excellent facilities, including a new well-equipped gym enable pupils to enjoy a range of activities. These include the principle winter sports of hockey, netball, rugby union, cross-country, swimming and the principle summer sports of athletics, cricket, rounders and tennis. Whilst continuing to achieve city, regional and county success in our traditional sports pupils have had the opportunity to represent the College in a number of new sports in recent years including water polo, indoor athletics, girls' football and rugby (Years 7-10), boys' handball, basketball and football in Years 8-13 (after February half-term). Again, success in terms of participation and results has been excellent.

It is common to see an extra-curricular sporting activity taking place from Monday through to Friday making full use of the excellent sporting facilities. Facilities at the College include a 25 metre swimming pool, floodlit astroturf pitches, sports hall, running track, gym, netball courts and climbing walls.

Pupils from Year 10 upwards can also take part in outdoor education such as hill walking, climbing, canoeing and other activities which form part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

There are opportunities to go on sporting trips regularly throughout the year, with Lower School pupils benefitting from seeing live international Rugby Union, Hockey and Netball games. The highlight of the sporting calendar is now the Senior Sports tours which includes our Hockey, Netball, Basketball and Rugby squads.

Most recently, Samantha Quek, GB Hockey Olympic Gold Medallist spoke to our Year 13 students and presented Colours Awards to our captains. Additionally, GCSE pupils have had the opportunity to listen to Olympic Swimmer and Old Edwardian, Michael Rock who spoke to them about his training for the Olympics for 2012. Michael is just one of a number of Old Edwardians who have gone on to great sporting triumph once leaving the College.

Pupils in Years 7 - 11 receive two one hour lessons rotating through the various activities on offer, with the exception of GCSE triple scientists who receive one hour lesson per fortnight. For KS4 General PE, pupils follow an options program for Games but all pupils have one HRF lesson per week of their two lesson allocation.

Pupils in Year 7 and 8 take part in a Values lesson as part of their timetable, which promotes sport and physical education driven by values: discipline, effort, honesty, hope, humility, respect and team spirit.
