Why should I choose it?

Geography is a relevant, dynamic and above all exciting subject. Who wouldn’t want to study a discipline which explores contemporary concepts and case studies in an ever changing world? Students are not just learning about Geography but are on a journey to becoming Geographers when they choose to study GCSE Geography.

If the following applies to you, Geography is worthy of consideration for study at GCSE:

  • An enjoyment of considering key issues in the news.
  • An enthusiasm to learn about different cultures in different parts of the world.
  • An excitement in considering major problems in the world such as global warming and population change and offering possible solutions.

What does the course involve?

GCSE Geography is divided into three distinct units. Physical Geography involves the study of hazards, ecosystems and landscapes while Human Geography involves the study of urbanisation, economics and resource management. Finally, Geographical Skills involves ‘issue evaluation’ regarding pre-release materials issued 12 weeks before the exam and answering questions about fieldwork experiences.

What skills will I develop?

The ability to think critically and justify decision making with evidence are essential skills the course facilitates. Literacy and numeracy are also key components in the make-up of the course.

How will I learn?

All geographical learning experiences are exciting and involve the study of contemporary concepts and case studies. Fundamental to learning is decision making and critical thinking providing a skillset for all students to achieve their potential. The highlight of the course is a residential fieldtrip to the Isle of Arran, Western Scotland, for a week at the start of Year 11.

How will I be assessed?

  • Unit 1: Living with the physical environment – 1 hour 30 minutes exam (35% of the overall mark)
  • Unit 2: Challenges in the human environment – 1 hour 30 minutes exam (35% of the overall mark)

Geography is all about people and places, therefore it is relevant to an extensive variety of careers. Journalism, accountancy, law, education, the environment and healthcare are all popular destinations for Geography graduates. Furthermore, Geography could inspire you to explore the world and travel experiencing a diverse array of cultures on your journey.
