Principal's Welcome
It is a privilege to introduce myself as the Principal of St Edward’s College. The time we spend in education is more than just preparation for the next stage of life - it's the foundation upon which we build our future. These are the years that shape our minds, our hearts, and our characters. At St Edward’s College, we believe in nurturing young people who possess the virtues necessary to lead with wisdom and compassion. As it says in Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Leadership, in its essence, is about making good things happen. It's about lifting others up and making a positive difference in the world. So, everything we do at St Edward’s - whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports field, in the recital room, or out on an expedition - is focused on equipping our pupils with the ambition, the strong qualifications, and the strength of character they need to change the world for the better. We want them to live out their discipleship of Jesus Christ, to be "men and women for others.” Herein lies the meaning of our school motto, ‘Courage through Faith’ (Psalm 27).
St Edward’s College is a Catholic academy (11-18), part of the Edmund Rice family of schools founded by the Christian Brothers and inspired by the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice. We select 20% of our pupils based on musical aptitude, serving as the choir school for Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, where our students regularly lead choral worship. The remaining places are allocated according to our admissions policy to young people of all abilities who seek a traditional, academic curriculum within an explicitly Catholic culture. In essence, St Edward’s College is a place where young people are both challenged and supported. With outstanding examination results and high standards in music and sport, we are proud to be one of the foremost Catholic schools in England.
The five keys of being an Edwardian are not just words - they are the principles that guide us every day. We teach our pupils to ‘Be Proud’, to carry themselves with dignity and confidence, just as Psalm 139:14 reminds us, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." We encourage them to ‘Join In’, to be part of something bigger than themselves, knowing that, as Ecclesiastes 4:9 says, "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour." We ask them to ‘Grow in Faith’, to deepen their relationship with God, for as Hebrews 11:1 tells us, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." We teach them to ‘Treat People Well’, remembering the Golden Rule from Matthew 7:12, "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." And finally, we urge them to ‘Work Hard’, as Colossians 3:23 instructs us, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."
